I am the author of Outside Literary Studies: Black Criticism and the University (University of Chicago Press), which investigates how midcentury Black left writers forged critical practice and interpretive institutions against the racism and anticommunism of the New Critical university and the U.S. state. I am also the editor of University Keywords (Johns Hopkins University Press), a volume on how universities operate as social and economic engines that shape society beyond their traditional educational roles.

I am working on two new books. One traces the history of socialist and Communist institutions of adult education in the US. The other theorizes productive and reproductive labor by examining the linked historical development of universities and academic medical centers.

My teaching covers the intersection of Black studies, critical ethnic studies, urban studies, critical university studies, and literary studies.

I am the Senior Associate Director of the Aydelotte Foundation at Swarthmore College.
